Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has refused to criticise his players despite the nature of their 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.

Midfielder Julio Arca's error gifted Liverpool a goal but Southgate declined to single out individual mistakes.

He told BBC Tees: "We've made mistakes all across the field.

"We win or lose as a team. I don't operate a blame culture in our club and we encourage people to go out and play. We'll stick together as a team."

I'm not going to crucify Jeremie he's been fantastic

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate on Jeremie Aliadiere

Southgate will go into Wednesday's FA Cup replay with Sheffield United without striker Jeremie Aliadiere.

The Frenchman saw red for raising his hands to Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano but Southgate believes the suspension is punishment enough for the former Arsenal forward.

"The most annoying part about it is that we had just scored the second goal, they were having a wobble and we might have snatched an equaliser.

"I'm not going to crucify Jeremie. He's been fantastic, it's a lesson he'll learn from and the harshest lesson for him is that he'll miss three games.

"With the strikers that we've got he'll have a fight to get back in the side."
