Mendieta has made 29 appearances for Boro this season |
Middlesbrough midfielder Gaizka Mendieta will miss the rest of the season after breaking a bone in his foot during training. The 32-year-old suffered the fractured metatarsal injury on Monday and he will not play again until next term.
Mendieta will need an operation to repair the damage and is expected to be out of action for about 12 weeks.
The Spaniard was an unused substitute during Middlesbrough's 1-0 league victory over Manchester City on Sunday.
Boro are in the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup and face an FA Cup quarter-final replay against Charlton next week.
Mendieta joined the club on an initial season-long loan deal in August 2003, and was a member of the side which lifted the Carling Cup in the following February.
His loan move became a permanent four-year switch in July 2004.
