McMahon has come through the youth ranks at Boro |
Middlesbrough defender Tony McMahon has signed an extension to his current contract which will keep him at the club until at least 2008. The 18-year-old has made 15 league and cup appearances for Boro.
"I'm over the moon to have signed. I'm a local lad and I'm fulfilling a dream I've had to be playing for the first team," he told BBC Radio Cleveland.
Boss Steve McClaren added: "This is great news for the club and for Tony. He has made huge strides this season."
However, McClaren insisted that there is more to come from McMahon, who captained Boro's FA Youth Cup-winning team last season and is a regular in the England Under-18 squad.
"He has never looked out of place in the first team," he said.
"There's still plenty of room for improvement, of course, but he can have a big future if he continues to work hard."
Boro have also confirmed that goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has now signed the three-year contract extension he agreed recently, which also commits his future to the Riverside until 2008.
