Mansfield Town have moved to bolster their promotion prospects by signing veteran former Republic of Ireland striker David Kelly.

Kelly will move to Field Mill on an initial three-month contract following his departure from Scottish Premier League side Motherwell.

The 36-year-old striker has scored almost 200 League goals in a prolific career which started at Walsall and has included spells at West Ham, Newcastle, Leicester, Sunderland, Wolves, Tranmere and Sheffield United.

Mansfield recently lost Matthew Piper back to Leicester after a loan spell.

We'll look at things at the end of the season and if it all goes well then we'll talk about next season

The Stags will be looking to Kelly to strike up a prolific partnership with DivisionThree's leading scorer, Chris Greenacre as they bid to keep an automatic promotion spot in their sights.

Manager Stuart Watkiss told the club's official website: "I'm very pleased.

"David is the type of player we need. He has loads of experience, which will benefit the younger players, and whatever club he's been at he's scored goals.

"He had a fair few offers but I am delighted he chose to come here, I've known him for a long time and I know his qualities.

"We'll look at things at the end of the season and if it all goes well then we'll talk about next season."

Kelly will not be eligible for Town's home game against Kidderminster as he awaits international clearance, but could make his debut against Rochdale.
