Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves is confident he will soon return "better than ever" after more than a year out with a serious knee injury.
Hargreaves was told by renowned surgeon Dr Richard Steadman that his problems were among the worst he had seen.
But the 28-year-old England midfielder insisted: "The best is yet to come and I cannot wait to get back out there.
"I will be trying to improve my game and achieve the great success I think we (United) are destined for."
Hargreaves has only started 25 times for his club since a £17m move from Bayern Munich in July 2007.
He last played for United against Chelsea 13 months ago and therefore missed out on a championship-winning season.
But he is hugely heartened by the progress he has made off the pitch in that time.
"To look back at where I was to where I am now is amazing," said the Canadian-born player.
"I just want to be part of it again and have a great season. I cannot wait to pay back some of the faith the fans have shown me."
