Real Madrid are in pursuit of United's Cristiano Ronaldo
Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes Cristiano Ronaldo will be the one to decide whether his future lies away from Manchester United.
On Sunday, Calderon appeared to admit defeat in his bid to sign 23-year-old Ronaldo, saying United would not sell.
But just 24 hours later he said that if a player wants to leave then there is little a club can do to stop him.
"If Ronaldo wants to leave Manchester, he'll leave. If he wants to stay, he'll stay," he told Spanish newspaper AS.
"I don't think you can keep anyone in a place where they don't want to be, even in a family.
"But I insist that for a formal negotiation to start Manchester United will have to open their doors to us. Manchester have to want to talk."
Calderon added that United should be "proud" to let Ronaldo join the Spanish champions, a club the winger has admitted he is keen to play for at some stage in his career.
"I think that, first of all, it's the desire of the player to join us, but, of course, Manchester shouldn't be angry and they should open up their stance," he added.
"We can't be blamed if nearly every player wants to come to Real Madrid. If I was Manchester United I'd be happy and proud to be able to negotiate such a transfer for one of my players," he said.
"Everything would be a lot easier if United realised that they could pull off the transfer of the century."
Real are yet to make an official bid for the forward, who scored 42 goals for his United last season as they won a Premier League and Champions League double.
The Spanish giants are rumoured to be preparing a package to bring Ronaldo to the Bernabeu, but Calderon has said that Real will not go against United's wishes.
"I have heard that he has said many times that he would like to go to Madrid and it is his dream," he said.
"But we can't say any more as it could be misinterpreted and we wouldn't like to upset Manchester.
"I don't know if he will play for Real Madrid next season. We will only do what Manchester United want to do with the player.
"We are very good friends with Manchester United and they have said many times that they don't want to sell the player so we can't do anything.
"If they say sometime that they would like to sell we will be there and will ask."
Calderon and Manchester United chief-executive David Gill will come face-to-face on Monday at the European Club Association general assembly in Switzerland for the first time since rumours of Ronaldo's departure surfaced.
