The 32-year-old Norwegian has returned to first-team action after almost two years of injury problems.

"I have spoken to chief executive David Gill about the situation and if Ole comes through this injury, we will be talking to him," said Ferguson.

"It is a measure of the man that I never doubted he would come back."

Solskjaer's one-year contract runs out in the summer but he looks to have finally recovered from knee problems that threatened his career.

He was even made skipper for the club's two FA Cup ties with Burton.

"It has taken a lot of determination," added Ferguson.

"We are not seeing him at his best at the moment but there were two brief moments on Wednesday when we saw the real class he has.

"He has this fantastic movement and exceptional positional play and vision. It is all about games for him now and the more he gets the better he will be.

"The really great thing about this comeback is he has not missed a training session, which is absolutely terrific for him and us.

"It doesn't matter how old you are, when you have been out for 18 months it takes you a while to get back into the swing of things.

"But all we want to do know is give him as many matches as we can, see some improvement and hopefully get him back to somewhere near the level he was before."
