Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he was relieved his team recorded their second victory of the season against rivals Liverpool. He said: "It's always welcome. You go through a period where there are a lot of changes in the team and injuries and you get the results you do not expect.
"We were so dominant and played so well but we didn't turn that into goals.
"We couldn't get going really and then they scored and that got us going again. I think we deserved to win."
Ferguson also revealed he expects Wayne Rooney to be ready for action in early October, possibly for the game against Middlesbrough on 3 October.
The 18-year-old had a further scan on Monday on the foot he broke in England's Euro 2004 defeat to Portugal this summer.
"It's going to be about two more weeks," said Ferguson.
"Wayne will go back to see the specialist on Thursday but I think we are looking at the Middlesbrough game.
"By that time we should have Gary Neville and Louis Saha back and then you will start to see the strength of Manchester United."
Ferguson dropped Tim Howard for the Liverpool game, replacing him with Roy Carroll.
"It could be that the second season is always a test for everyone," said Ferguson explaining his decision to drop the American goalkeeper.
"They go through a period when they're flying high. They don't see the bad days ahead.
"When you have that blip the only way to get out of it is to come out of it altogether.
"And that's what we've done with Tim."
