Man Utd upset PSV
PSV Eindhoven srtiker Arjen Robben
PSV Eindhoven president Harry van Raaij has criticised Manchester United's conduct in the negotiations over the collapse of Arjen Robben's transfer.

Van Raaij has claimed he had agreed a 10m deal "in principle" with former United chief executive Peter Kenyon.

But when United's offer for Robben, 20, arrived it was for half that figure.

Van Raaij said: "I don't understand why their approach changed so much because when the offer came in it was about half of what we had spoken about."

He added: "Given the difference between the two offers I do not see any way Arjen will join them in time for next season."

The PSV president also suggested Kenyon's departure for Chelsea and the on-going row between the club and major shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus might have contributed to the transfer's collapse.

Van Raaij added: "Everything changed. I read in the newspapers that there are some problems at the club.

"Maybe that was part of it or maybe it's because Peter Kenyon left and David Gill came in, but I don't know for sure.

"I have dealt with Manchester United over the transfers of Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy but the way they have handled this is very different to the way they have done it in the past."

Meanwhile the player's father and agent, Hans Robben, blamed both clubs for the failure to reach a deal.

Robben senior told the Dagblad van het Noorden newspaper: "I don't know if PSV asked too much or if United simply didn't offer enough. What I do know is that the difference was too big."

United reportedly offered 4.8m for Robben, some way short of PSV's 10.3m valuation.

It is a shame, Arjen would have loved to join Manchester United

Robben moved to PSV in 2001 from FC Groningen for almost 3.4m and is contracted with the current Eredivisie champions until 2007.
