Manchester United have delivered their response to the 99 questions posed by the club's largest shareholders about recent transfers and business dealings. Lawyers acting for John Magnier and JP McManus have received a seven-page document, the contents of which the Irish pair are said to be considering.
United's directors hope the document will provide satisfactory answers.
But if it does not, Magnier and McManus could still call for an emergency general meeting of the United board.
Magnier and McManus who, through their investment company Cubic Expression, own 25.49% of the club could also report any concerns to the Financial Services Authority.
The central component of the horseracing tycoon's original letter was to highlight transfer deals and corporate governance where they felt United's conduct fell "short of best practice".
United responded by promising to carry out a thorough review of all their procedures.
And United finance director Nick Humby has already launched an investigation into the club's recent transfers and has begun contacting the agents involved in those deals.
On Wednesday, Magnier's lawyers requested tapes of manager Sir Alex Ferguson's press conference last Friday.
During the briefing, Ferguson spoke of how his agent son Jason had called in the police after having his dustbins searched.
Magnier and McManus are thought to be investigating whether Ferguson's comments could be construed to implicate them and therefore be defamatory.
United are consulting their lawyers before deciding whether to hand over the transcripts.
Magnier is currently locked in a legal battle with Ferguson over the stud rights to the racehorse Rock of Gibraltar.
