Ferguson salutes Saha
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex Ferguson praised debutant Louis Saha, who scored with a deflected free-kick to set Manchester United on the way to victory against Southampton.

"I couldn't be more pleased with Louis," said Ferguson after United's 3-2 win put them back on top of the Premiership on Saturday.

"He had an excellent game. He is quick, aggressive and looked a real threat.

"There are signs that his partnership with Ruud could develop really well."

Ferguson, who admitted that recent events at Old Trafford had been distressing for him, thanked United fans for their support.

The Scot is currently involved in a legal battle with one of United's major shareholders, John Magnier, over the stud rights to the racehorse Rock of Gibraltar.

United supporters have backed Ferguson all the way and, on Saturday, they chanted his name at regular intervals and stood as one when demanded to by the more vociferous sections of a record Premiership crowd.

"It was great," Ferguson admitted.

"I wouldn't say it gives me inner strength, though - I have never lacked that."
