Mark Hughes vented his fury at referee Mark Clattenburg's treatment of Craig Bellamy after Manchester City drew 3-3 in a fiery game at Bolton.

Bellamy was booked for dissent and then received a second yellow for diving.

Hughes told BBC Sport that Clattenburg had "passed judgement on what he thinks of Craig Bellamy" during half-time.

"I don't appreciate when the referees come out for the second half making comments about who they do or do not like in my team," the City boss added.

Bellamy was dismissed in the 64th minute when Clattenburg ruled the Welshman had dived after a challenge by Paul Robinson, although replays appeared to show there was contact between the two players.

Bellamy had earlier been booked after objecting to Bolton's third goal, though many in the stadium missed the decision.

It was the first time that Bellamy has been sent off in seven years, with the Welsh striker last sent off in the Premier League eight years ago.

Hughes, who also was angry that Bolton's first goal should have been ruled out for offside, was furious with Clattenburg's overall performance, telling BBC 5 live it was "mystifying - at times laughable".

"For Mr Clattenburg to deem that worthy of a sending off is a joke," said Hughes.

Hughes later told the Press Association news agency: "Craig is running at full pelt and has knocked the ball past him (Robinson).

"But for some reason Mr Clattenburg thought Craig was looking to deceive him and decided to send him off.

"Paul Robinson has made out he has dived as he doesn't want to be booked himself. That is quite a natural reaction, that's what happens.

"Everyone in the stadium seemed to be mystified for quite some time. Apparently he had booked him after the third goal for dissent."

Hughes also revealed that City assistant manager Mark Bowen approached the referee in the officials' office at full-time in an attempt to clarify several decisions.

Hughes said: "My assistant manager (Bowen) wasn't too impressed by what was said and the excuses given.

"We are really frustrated with his performance and the performance of the other officials. The first goal is clearly offside. Why the hell they found it difficult to get that one right I have no idea."

Bolton manager Gary Megson also thought Clattenburg had got it wrong in dismissing Bellamy.

Megson said: "I thought it was a bit harsh. He did not seem to be looking for it as he has gone past our full-back. I did not realise he had been booked earlier.

"I knew Craig when he was a young lad at Norwich. He has not changed. He is still fiery as well as being a marvellous player."

The BBC was unable to contact the manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMO) Mike Riley to discuss Clattenburg's peformance or Hughes' comments.
