Manchester City plan to hold contract talks with Daniel Sturridge, but boss Mark Hughes has warned his advisors the club will not be held to ransom.
One of the graduates of City's academy, the 19-year-old striker is in the final year of his current contract.
"There are meetings planned for this week," said Hughes. "We hope something can come from that.
"But there has to be an understanding from his advisors that there is a level for everybody."
And Hughes added: "I'm sure there's a compromise to be made and we'll get there very soon."
Sturridge's contract ends in June 2009, which means he is free to explore other options.
The City striker has scored three league goals this season in 18 appearances, 13 of those as substitute.
