Schmeichel has been on loan at Cardiff and Coventry this season
Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel will leave Manchester City at the end of the season according to his father, City and Manchester United legend Peter.
The 21-year-old is unhappy at being only third choice behind Andreas Isaksson and Joe Hart at City.
He is, though, due to play in City's end-of-season tour in Thailand in May.
But his father Peter told BBC Sport: "It's one of the last things he's going to do as a Manchester City player. He's leaving this season."
Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson made it clear he cannot promise him a regular starting place and Schmeichel went on loan to Cardiff in September.
He returned to City in January but was then loaned to Coventry.
Father Peter believes the club's 10-day post-season tour to Thailand will be an unwelcome distraction for his son.
Kasper's going somewhere else - Peter Schmeichel
The former Denmark international said: "My son's a Manchester City player and he's going on this tour, which is an interference.
"Obviously it's an interruption. He's not complaining but there's a lot of other players complaining about it and I fully understand it.
"I understand if you go on a pre-season tour, it's partly promotional and partly training.
"But when you have been through a very, very tough season the players are worn out and are really tired.
"You can tell from Manchester City's results of late - they are really tired.
"What's really important for my son now is a period of rest. He's been through a long season, you want to put your feet up, get back some normality in your head and then prepare for the next season.
