Greek forward Georgios Samaras and new signing Bernardo Corradi combined to help 10-man Manchester City to a 1-0 win over Shanghai Shenhua in China. Samaras, who joined last season, scored the only goal 10 minutes before half-time when he converted Corradi's whipped cross at the far post.
Shenhua fought back after the break, with former Bayern Munich striker Carsten Jancker coming close.
Ben Thatcher was shown a second yellow after an clash with Shenhua's Sun Ji.
