George Graham
Graham: Emerging as an early favourite for City job
BBC Sport Online's Simon Austin looks at the credentials of the main contenders for the vacant manager's job at Manchester City.

George Graham
City chairman David Bernstein is a big admirer of Graham.

The Scot clearly has the experience to handle a club the size of City.

He enjoyed a hugely successful career with Arsenal and turned round a struggling Leeds side during two years at Elland Road.

He is also eager to move back into management and at 56 still has a lot to offer.

George Graham
But Graham's spell at Tottenham damaged a previously glowing reputation.

He failed to deliver the success that the White Hart Lane faithful demanded and developed an obdurate rather than an artistic side.

And there are also doubts over whether he is suited to modern management and handling multi-million pound players.

David Moyes
Moyes is recognised as one of the country's brightest young managers after two years at Preston.

When he took over at Deepdale, Preston were languishing in the Second Division.

David Moyes
Now they could go into the Premiership if they beat Bolton in the Division One play-off final on Monday.

Moyes has proved himself an excellent man-manager, shrewd tactician and an excellent operator in the transfer market.

But if Preston do reach the Premiership, he is unlikely to want to move down a division with City.

Mick McCarthy
At just 42-years-old and with club and international experience behind him, McCarthy would be the top choice of many City insiders.

He was successful at Millwall before going on to manage the Republic of Ireland, who are currently top of a World Cup qualifying group including Holland and Portugal.

Mick McCarthy
McCarthy also has a City pedigree, having turned out for the Blues during an illustrious playing career.

His teams are normally pragmatic and uncompromising - like he was as a player - but also tend to have an element of flair.

However, his involvement with Eire's blossoming World Cup bid is likely to count him out of the Maine Road job.

Willie Donachie
City's assistant manager could be the man if City choose to appoint from within.
Willie Donachie

Donachie's progressive coaching methods have made him a favourite with the players.

But he has never taken sole charge of the club before and other excellent coaches, like Brian Kidd, have found it difficult to make the transition to management.

Kevin Keegan
Out of football after quitting the England job last autumn.

Kevin Keegan
Keegan has experience of transforming ailing superclubs after turning struggling Newcastle into one of the best teams in the country.

His sides play attractive football and he has excellent man-management skills.

But there are question-marks about his tactical know-how.

Sir Alex Ferguson
Ferguson will be available after deciding to sever all ties with Manchester United at the end of next season.

Sir Alex Ferguson
He has an unbeatable track record and might be tempted to get back at the Old Trafford board by joining United's fiercest rivals.

But a move to City is improbable to say the least when the likes of Barcelona are said to be interested in him.

William Hill are accordingly offering odds of 100/1 on Fergie going to Maine Road.
