Carragher has made 31 appearances for the Reds this season

Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher says the Reds can still qualify for the Europa League.

The Reds, who last failed to reach European competition in 1999, are five points behind fifth-placed Tottenham after their 2-1 defeat by West Brom.

Defender Carragher told BBC Radio Merseyside: "Plenty of times we thought it was gone [with results] against Wigan at home and West Ham away.

"Then we get a couple of results after that and you think it's back on again."

But the 33-year-old admitted: "The West Brom result is a disappointing one and Europe looks further away.

"But we beat Manchester United after defeat to West Ham, so we'll be looking to do the same against Manchester City and give everyone a lift."

The defeat at The Hawthorns on Saturday was Liverpool's 12th league loss of the season and their 10th away from Anfield.

Kenny Dalglish's team conceded two late penalties, both converted by Baggies captain Chris Brunt.

Carragher believes the points his side could have gained from draws over the campaign would have been more than useful at this stage of the season.

"It's always frustrating when you lose a game especially late on," the former England international said. "If you look at the season we haven't drawn too many games and we've either won or lost.

"And that's another game that a draw wouldn't have been the worst result after the way we played, as we weren't at our best.

"It's happened a few times this season were the single points here and there maybe would have given us three or four points. That's another one against West Brom."
