Shelvey joined Liverpool from Charlton in April 2010
Liverpool's teenage midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been ruled out for the next three months with a knee tendon injury.
The problem forced the 18-year-old to withdraw from England Under-19s' friendly against Germany on Tuesday.
Further assessment at the club's Melwood training ground has revealed it is a significant problem.
"I'm a bit down at the moment but I'm just hoping now I can come back stronger," the ex-Charlton player told the Liverpool website.
Shelvey has been a used substitute in each of Kenny Dalglish's first six matches in charge since taking over from Roy Hodgson last month.
Dalglish said of the teenager: "He has done well so it is a disappointment for everyone."
Defender Martin Skrtel is another injury concern for Dalglish with a thigh problem.
Skrtel, 26, travelled with Slovakia but did not take part in their midweek friendly against Luxembourg.
Steven Gerrard missed England's win over Denmark on Wednesday with a thigh strain but could be fit to face Wigan in the Premier League on Saturday.
"Obviously we hope he will be," said Reds boss Kenny Dalglish. "It's only Thursday, so we'll find out."
Gerrard, 30, withdrew from Fabio Capello's squad on Sunday after Liverpool's 1-0 win at Chelsea.
The Reds manager was unwilling to put a timeframe on the return from injury of record signing Andy Carroll.
The £35m England striker, bought on transfer deadline day, is continuing his rehabilitation from a thigh problem sustained while he was still at Newcastle.
"Andy is progressing very well. We never gave a date and we won't put a date on it - we just said it would be a few weeks," added Dalglish.
"As long as we are patient and Andy is patient we'll be OK, but we won't be rushing him back."
