After clinching the club's first European Cup in May 1977, Liverpool boss Bob Paisley replaces Hamburg-bound Kevin Keegan with Celtic's Kenny Dalglish for a then British record 440,000 in August of the same year
Dalglish's first season with the Reds culminates with him scoring the only goal of the 1978 European Cup final against Bruges at Wembley to bring the trophy back to Anfield

A third European Cup triumph for the Merseysiders follows in 1981 as Alan Kennedy's goal sees off Real Madrid in Paris. Fellow Scots Graeme Souness (left) and Alan Hansen (right) help Dalglish celebrate
Dalglish is spared from taking part in the 1984 final penalty shoot-out after being substituted in extra time. But goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar's 'spaghetti legs' wrap up the club's fourth European Cup success
The Reds' 1985 final defeat by Juventus is overshadowed by the Heysel Stadium disaster in which 39 fans die. Twenty-four years earlier Dalglish had been at Rangers' Ibrox Stadium when 66 fans died in a stairwell crush
Later that summer, at the age of 34, Dalglish is the surprise successor to Joe Fagan as he becomes player-manager. He quells any doubts about his promotion with a league and FA Cup Double in his first season
Dalglish, flanked by 'boot room' legends Ronnie Moran (left) and Roy Evans (right), also won titles in 1988 and 1990. Liverpool have yet to regain the title since.
There are more celebrations in the Anfield dressing rooms five years later, but this time Dalglish is in charge of the visiting Blackburn squad having announced his resignation from his Liverpool post in 1991
A less successful spell at Newcastle follows. After guiding the Magpies to a second-place finish in 1997, an FA Cup final appearance is not enough to stave off the sack after dropping to 13th in 1998
A return to first club Celtic as technical director in 1999 yields little more success. Ex-Liverpool team-mate John Barnes is sacked as manager and, after a spell in the dug-out, Dalglish is ousted following Martin O'Neill's arrival
Despite his absence from the club, Dalglish's family connections with Liverpool remain strong. Daughter Kelly, an avid Reds fan, interviews Steven Gerrard after the 2006 FA Cup win
Dalglish returns to Anfield in 2009 to speak on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans died. As manager of the club in 1989, Dalglish attended as many as four funerals a day
He is back on the pitch later that year for a charity match and, with Rafael Benitez still in charge of Liverpool, is made club ambassador in July with a senior role in the club's academy
After reportedly offering to take up the reins after Benitez's departure in June 2010, Dalglish finally lands the manager's job's as Roy Hodgson's tenure ends after six months
Even FA Cup defeat to old rivals Manchester United only slightly dampens the buoyant mood among the travelling support at Old Trafford. An away league match against Blackpool is the next challenge for 'King Kenny'
