Toivanen has made an impressive start to the season
PSV Eindhoven say Liverpool have been in touch over the possibility of signing their striker Ola Toivonen.
Sweden international Toivonen, 24, has scored five goals in three games for PSV so far this season.
"Liverpool have been in contact with us and they know what we think," said a PSV spokesman. "But there has been nothing in the last two or three days."
The Reds, who have sold keeper Diego Cavalieri to Cesena, are also believed to want PSV left-back Carlos Salcido.
Salcido, 30, is an experienced Mexico international who played for his country at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
"We don't know Liverpool's intentions about Carlos Salcido. He is a new name on the page," added the PSV spokesman.
However, the interest in Toivonen, who played for Orgryte and Malmo in Sweden before switching to PSV, is of a more concrete nature as Reds boss Roy Hodgson attempts to bolster his attacking options.
The Swede has been in impressive form in helping PSV make a 100% start to the current campaign with three games played.
He also scored for his country in a recent 3-0 win over Scotland and the stumbling block over any move to Anfield appears to be the transfer fee.
Liverpool are thought to unwilling to pay more than £10m for Toivonen, but that fee apparently does not meet PSV's valuation.
