Liverpool suffer Gerrard setback

Gerrard missed Liverpool's win over Fulham with a neck injury

Manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that Steven Gerrard is a doubt for Liverpool's Champions League semi-final first leg tie with Chelsea on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old sat out his side's 2-0 win away at Fulham with a neck injury and Benitez is unsure if he will be fit in time to face the Blues at Anfield.

"We don't know at the moment," he said. "Steven is working with the physios.

"He is improving but it is still too soon. You always have to be careful with the neck."

Goals from Jermaine Pennant and Peter Crouch eased Liverpool to victory at Craven Cottage, but there were fitness concerns for Sami Hyypia and Javier Mascherano who were forced off after suffering knocks.

Hyypia suffered a knock to head and Benitez confirmed he was withdrawn as a precaution and should be fit to face Chelsea.

"I think he'll be ok," he said. "He felt a little bit dizzy after a knock to the head but I think it's ok now.

"Mascherano had three knocks but I think he too is ok."

The Liverpool boss has also admitted that plans are already underway to bring in some faces next season, with one deal already completed.

"We are working on trying to improve the squad for next season," said Benitez.

"We have some movements for next season, so we will continue trying to do the same.

"We have some signings for the next season done. They are senior players for the first team and young players for the first team and reserve team.

"Two of them are really close, young players, and one senior player is done. He talks good English, but is not English."
