Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano hopes he can do enough to turn his loan deal with Liverpool into a permanent move at the end of the season.
He arrived from West Ham during the 2006-07 season on an 18-month loan, with the prospect of a full transfer to be discussed at a later date.
But Liverpool would have to negotiate with Media Sports Investments, which still "owns" him and Carlos Tevez.
Mascherano said: "I'd love to stay and I will do everything I can to do so."
When Mascherano and Tevez moved to West Ham on 31 August 2006 it caused both the Hammers and the Premier League major problems.
MSI effectively owned the players, even though they were transferring from Brazilian club Corinthinians.
While Tevez signed for Manchester United a year after joining West Ham, Mascherano is still in limbo, and sources have started linking him with a move to Spain or Italy.
Mascherano said: "It depends on what everyone decides at the end of the season.
"I have just got to make sure everyone is happy with my performances and they want me to stay. I want to be here to play in the new stadium.
"We are already one of the greatest clubs in the world, but with the plans for the future we could become the world's greatest team."
