Reina completed his move to Anfield on 4 July |
Liverpool's new 6m goalkeeper Jose Reina says he is ready to compete with Jerzy Dudek for a first-team place. The 22-year-old, who completed his move to Anfield on 4 July, said he was encouraged by the praise he had received from Reds boss Rafael Benitez.
"I am grateful for any comments the manager has said about me but I think now is the time for me to prove it and not just talk about it," Reina said.
"I know nothing is given on a plate or taken for granted here."
The Spaniard could make his debut on Wednesday when Liverpool start the defence of their Champions League crown against the Welsh side TNS in the first qualifying round first leg tie.
"I hope I am accepted quickly by the fans, but I know that there is strong competition," added Reina, who has said he would like to be known as 'Pepe'.
Reina also spoke of his admiration for Dudek's performance in the Champions League final against AC Milan.
"Everyone should be credited for their performance but I think Jerzy was one of the heroes. It was incredible what he did in the penalty shoot-out and he is a real hero."
