Houllier stands by Heskey
Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier defends Emile Heskey following the Turkish tunnel fracas

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has defended Emile Heskey in reaction to the striker's apparent involvement in the Turkish tunnel fracas.

Heskey, who led the England forward line along with 17-year-old Wayne Rooney, could now find himself involved in the inquiry to be carried about the European football's governing body, Uefa.

"Is it being suggested Emile was involved? I did not see that," said Liverpool boss Houllier.

"I consider that Emile is not the sort of person that reacts, despite the provocation he gets. He is a very quiet man.

"And also I find coincidental that three players were also involved, not just Emile Heskey. It must have been a reaction to something that had been done."

The Liverpool boss added that he was unsure whether there was a racial element to the incident as reports have suggested.

"If Emile has reacted, it must have been something bad. I have talked to him about it and he has told me what happened, but I will not say because there is an inquiry," said Houllier.

"I am not sure there was any racism, I cannot say, let Uefa do the job.

"A lot of things happen sometimes in tunnels, and there was a lot of people involved in that one."

Meanwhile, the international career of Liverpool's Croatian midfielder Igor Biscan appears to be over after he failed to turn up for last week's Euro 2004 qualifier against Bulgaria.

"While I am coaching this national team Biscan will never play again, he will never get a second chance," said Croatia coach Otto Baric.

The Croatian FA president Vlatko Markovic agreed with Baric's sentiments.

"I've never heard of a similar case. He was nowhere for years and after a few good games he was invited back to the national team," he added.

"And he simply leaves without saying goodbye. He is a quality player but such behaviour will bring him no good."
