Liverpool net two keepers
Kirkland and Dudek are eligible for the Champions League
Kirkland and Dudek are eligible for Europe
Liverpool have sensationally signed goalkeepers Chris Kirkland and Jerzy Dudek ahead of Friday's Champions League deadline.

The double surprise swoop signals major doubts over the future of Dutch international Sander Westerveld at Anfield.

"We have signed both of them," Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton told BBC Sport Online.

"We have got a work permit and international clearance for Dudek and both are eligible to play in the Champions League."

England under-21 international Kirkland is reported to have signed for a British record transfer fee for a goalkeeper from Coventry City.

The fee is said to have exceeded the 6m Arsenal paid Ipswich for England international Richard Wright over the summer.

"Very reluctantly Coventry City have agreed to accept an offer from Liverpool FC for goalkeeper Chris Kirkland," Coventry chairman Bryan Richardson told the club's official website.

"It is particularly sad that we are compelled to sell someone in this way, but financial circumstances have forced this action."

Reports had suggested Dudek's proposed 4.85m move to Anfield from Dutch club Feyenoord was cancelled when Liverpool had confirmed Kirkland's switch.

However, all the formalities were completed in time before the Champions League deadline at midnight on Friday.

The Polish international said: "This is a great transfer. Liverpool are a great club.

It has always been our aim to strengthen every area of the team
Gerrard Houllier

"I am happy and proud to get the chance to play in a European top side.

"I owe it to Feyenoord, and that is why I would like to say goodbye to the fans in a good way."

Liverpool manager Houllier said he was delighted at capturing both keepers.

"It has always been our aim to strengthen every area of the team," he told the club's website.

"That is why we have ensured the signing of these two major goalkeeping talents.

"The addition of a hugely promising young talent (Kirkland) together with an experienced international (Dudek) will provide a major boost to the club."
