Lewes have given their blessing to a scheme which would see businessman Mark Henderson take over the club.
Henderson is managing director of the club's shirt sponsor, Magic Man, and has begun searching for 100 businesses or individuals to invest 5000 each.
Lewes managing director Martin Elliott told BBC Southern Counties Radio: "The idea is lots of people doing a little rather than a few doing a lot.
"It needs someone with a lot of time and energy to pull it together".
At least 20 potential investors are reported to be on board, and Elliott admits it could lead to Henderson taking over the reigns.
"It could end up with him very much more involved, and anyone else interested in rallying round him," said Elliott.
"He's talking about doing it on a very democratic basis.
"We've had a number of meetings with him now and we feel its certainly a course of action worth serious consideration," he added.
