![]() | Monday, 9 October, 2000, 11:55 GMT 12:55 UK Red Star receive �15,000 fine ![]() Leicester fans flee from flares Red Star Belgrade have been punished with a �15,000 fine for Yugoslavian fans aiming racist taunts at Leicester City players as well as hurling flares at both opposing supporters and onto the pitch. During the first round, second leg UEFA Cup tie between the two clubs at the neutral venue of the Austrian capital Vienna, Leicester's Ade Akinbiyi and Andy Impey were subjected to racist chanting while a flare landed near goalkeeper Tim Flowers. Flares were also hurled into the section allocated for Leicester's fans at the Gerhard-Hanappi-Stadion and UEFA, European football's governing body, have imposed the fine. A statement from UEFA read: "At its meeting at the UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, the Control and Disciplinary Body made the club responsible for the conduct of the Yugoslav fans, reported as humiliating in particular against some Leicester City FC players, whom they abused with racist chants, and endagering safety and security for players as well as other spectators by setting off rockets and Bengal lights which landed close to the English goalkeeper and throwing Bengal lights into the sector of Leicester supporters." | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Leicester City stories: Links to top Leicester City stories are at the foot of the page. | ||
