Marques has been ever present for Leeds this season |
Leeds United manager Dennis Wise has confirmed he will offer central defender Rui Marques a new contract. Marques' current deal runs out at the end of this season, and Wise has revealed he will wait until then to start negotiations.
The centre-back is currently with Angola ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations after putting in some impressive performances at Elland Road.
And Wise said: "Rui knows he's got another contract here."
 | He'd be mad to want a contract now because we only pay a certain amount of money |
"Does he want to sign a new contract on League One money when there's a possibility that we'll go up, or does he want to sign a contract on Championship money?," he added.
"He'd be mad to do it now because we only pay a certain amount of money. Obviously if we go up we'll pay that little bit more."
Marques' fortunes at Leeds have turned around drastically from Elland Road outsider to ever-present first-team starter.
After joining the club in 2005 he had to wait until New Year's Day 2007 to finally make his league debut.
He made just one further appearance before Wise became manager and the former Millwall boss was tempted to end Marques' contract just a month into his new job.
Due to his involvement in Ghana, Marques will be absent for Leeds until the end of January at least.
