As Leeds prepare for relegation from the Premiership, we look back at the highs and lows in their recent history... 5 May, 1990 Leeds return to the topflight Inspired by midfielder Gordon Strachan Leeds end an Beightyear absence B from the topflight. Leeds clinch the old Division Two title on the final day of the season with a 10 win at Bournemouth. They win the title on goal difference beating Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United.
2 May, 1992 Leeds crowned champions Under the mangement of Howard Wilkinson Leeds enjoy their finest moment of the modern era winning the BDivision One title B in the final season before the start of the Premiership. Lee Chapman scored the goals that enabled Leeds to beat bitter rivals Manchester United by four points.
27 November, 1992 Cantona leaves for Man Utd Eric Cantona had only been at the club since February 1992 but had played a key role in the club's championship win. Leeds fans were outraged by manager Howard Wilkinsons' decision to sell him to rivals BManchester United for �1.2m B where he enjoyed so much success.
25 November, 1995 Brolin joins for a club record fee Swedish midfielder Tomas Brolin joins Leeds for a Bclub record �4.5m B. It does not prove to be a good investment. His time at the club is marred by injuries and poor form and he is loaned to FC Zurich and Parma before eventually joining Crystal Palace in 1997.
24 March, 1996 Leeds lose CocaCola Cup final Leeds lose the CocaCola Cup final B30 to Aston Villa B at Wembley It is Leeds first cup final in 23 years but they are totally outclassed by Brian Little's team on the day.
10 September, 1996 Wilkinson sacked Howard Wilkinson's Beightyear tenure B as Leeds manager comes to an end when he is sacked after a disappointing start to the season. Wilkinson had guided Leeds to promotion back to the topflight and then the old Division One title but for the Caspian Group which had taken over in the summer it was time for a change and former Arsenal boss B George Graham took charge B.
1 October, 1998 Graham walks out and OLeary takes charge Just over two years after taking charge BGeorge Graham walks out on the Yorkshire club B to take over at Premiership rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Graham had recently signed a twoyear deal with the club. After failing to lure Martin O'Neill from Leicester the club take a gamble by appointing Graham's assistant David O'Leary as boss. It is quickly vindicated when Leeds finish the season in fourth place.
18 January, 2000 Bowyer and Woodgate arrested Leeds duo BLee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate are arrested B. They are accused of an attack on Asian student Sarfraz Najeib in Leeds city centre. The arrest marks the start of a unsavoury episode in the club's recent history. The first trial is abandoned after a story in a national newspaper and the whole incident hangs over the club for more than a year.
5 April, 2000 Leeds fans killed in Turkey Leeds' joy at reaching the semifinal of the Uefa Cup turns to distress when fans BChristopher Loftus and Kevin Speight are murdered in Turkey B ahead of the first leg of their match with Galatasaray. David O'Leary's team eventually lose the semifinal tie but it has been a successful season with the team finishing third in the Premiership and winning entry to the Champions League.
May, 2001 Leeds miss out on Champions League Leeds' season once full of promise ends on a low. The club reach the Blast four of the Champions League B losing to Valencia 30 in the away leg after a goalless draw at home. The club finish Bfourth in the Premiership B missing out on next season's Champions League and the muchneeded revenue it brings. But there is no hint yet of the problems that soon engulf the club. 29 November, 2001 Robbie Fowler joins for �11m Leeds capture BRobbie Fowler from Liverpool for �11m B. It is the latest in an intense period of spending that has seen players such as Mark Viduka Rio Ferdinand Seth Johnson and Robbie Keane join for a combined total of more than �50m. Watch/Listen:
14 December, 2001 The trials of Woodgate and Bowyer end Almost 22 months after their arrest BJonathan Woodgate is found guilty of affray and Lee Bowyer not guilty of GBH and affray B following an incident outside a Leeds nightclub in which Asian student Sarfraz Najeib is badly beaten. The whole saga has cast a dark shadow over Elland Road and proved to be a major distraction to the club's pursuit of honours. Watch/Listen:
27 June, 2002 Leeds sack OLeary after more Champions League disappointment Manager David O'Leary is sacked. Leeds have finished the recently completed season in fifth place missing out on Champions League qualification for the second straight season. The loss of revenue hits the club hard and their gamble of spending to succeed starts to unravel. Watch/Listen:
22 July, 2002 Ferdinand sold to Man Utd Leeds' record signing Rio Ferdinand who joined the club on 26 November 2000 is sold to bitter rivals Manchester United for �30m. Chairman Peter Ridsdale defends the decision saying it is good business. But it marks the start of a series of highprofile departures. By the end of January 2003 the club's financial problems are public knowledge and Lee Bowyer Robbie Fowler and Jonathan Woodgate have been sold. Watch/Listen:
21 March, 2003 Leeds sack Venables Manager BTerry Venables leaves Elland Road just eight months B after arriving at the club. Former Sunderland boss BPeter Reid B is put in temporary charge of the club with a brief of keeping them in the Premiership. Successive victories in their last two games including a famous win at Arsenal ensures they do so. Reid is eventually named manager on a permanent basis. Watch/Listen:
17 April, 2003 Ridsdale severs Leeds ties McKenzie takes over Peter Ridsdale the man who sanctioned the club's bigspending policy resigns as a member of the club's plc and football club boards. He quit as chairman in March after six years at the helm. Professor John McKenzie takes over as the club's new chairman. Leeds are now in crisis with spiralling debts threatening the club's existence. The buy buy buy policy has become sell sell sell. Watch/Listen:
9 July, 2003 Kewell sold to Liverpool Australian forward BHarry Kewell is sold to Liverpool for �5m B. The handling of the transfer is widely criticised with the player's agent Bernie Mandic rumoured to have received a substantial fee of the deal with just �3m left for Leeds. Kewell is a product of the Leeds youth system and at one point was a symbol of the club's immense promise. Watch/Listen:
28 October, 2003 Record losses at the club The club announces Brecord pretax losses of �49.5m B for the year ending 30 June 2003. Turnover at the club is down by 21 and tangible assets are down from �109m to �60m. Former Chelsea chief executive BTrevor Birch takes over shortly afterwards B with a brief of sorting out the club's finances. Reports of the increasing desperation surface almost daily with some suggesting the club's debts are now more than �100m and that administration is inevitable. Watch/Listen:
10 November, 2003 Reid sacked with Leeds in trouble Reid's tenure at Leeds ends with the club bottom of the Premiership. BReid lasted 22 games B and a 61 home defeat to Portsmouth sealed his fate. BEddie Gray is put in temporary charge B and remains as manager for the rest of the season. Watch/Listen:
15 December, 2003 McKenzie steps down Professor John Mckenzie's resigns from the board at the club's annual meeting. His tenure as chairman has lasted just nine months. Chief executive Trevor Birch suggests McKenzie has stepped down to line up a takeover bid in conjunction with a Chinese consortium but it never materialises.
19 March, 2004 The takeover goes through After months of speculation a locallybased consortium completes a B�30m takeover B with Gerald Krasner installed as the new chairman. Rumours had been rife for several months regarding possible takeovers including Arab businessman Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Mubarak AlKhalifa. Krasner declares the club is off lifesupport and says he is there for the long term. Watch/Listen:
2 May, 2004 Leeds crash out of the Premiership A 41 defeat at Bolton means Leeds' worst fears are confirmed and though not mathematically relegated their awful goal difference condemns them to Division One football next season. The consequent Bloss of income B and the Binevitable sale of their best players B leaves Leeds facing an almighty struggle to find a way back to the top of English football...
