Alan Smith is "Leeds through and through" |
Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has insisted the club will not sell star striker Alan Smith this summer. Leeds have had to sell a handful of big names, including Rio Ferdinand, Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer, because of huge debts.
But Ridsdale said the club now has money in the bank and has no intention of selling Smith, whom he described as "Leeds through and through".
Ridsdale, whose position at the club is under increasing pressure, was asked if Smith would still be at Leeds next season, given that Liverpool are reported to be interested in the 22-year-old.
Ridsdale said: "If people carry on as they are carrying on then you might have to ask somebody else that question.
"But if I'm chairman I fully expect Alan Smith to be a Leeds United footballer for next season and for many seasons to come.
David Batty hasn't played that many games of late but hopefully we can get him fit |
"The fact is Alan Smith is not for sale. He is a player that has just signed a new five-year contract and he is Leeds through and through."
Meanwhile, new Leeds manager Peter Reid has insisted that veteran midfielder David Batty "is part of my plans".
Batty was frozen out under former boss Terry Venables but will continue his rehabilitation when Leeds reserves take on Liverpool's second string on Monday night.
Earlier this season Ridsdale said injuries would prevent the former England man from ever playing at the highest level again.
But Reid is hoping to get Batty fit enough to help in Leeds' fight against relegation.
"David hasn't played that many games of late but hopefully we can get him fit and see what fitness level he's at, and then I'll make a decision," said Reid.
"But certainly he is in my plans."
