Kilmarnock are hoping to persuade manager Jim Jefferies to extend his stay at Rugby Park. Chairman Michael Johnston has opened talks with Jefferies, who is being strongly linked with Dundee United.
"We spoke a couple of weeks ago but they were just initial talks and we were going to discuss it further in the future," Jefferies told BBC Sport.
"But there were no real details. They might want me to make more cuts or take less (pay)."
Jefferies, who dismissed reports of a possible move to Tannadice as "pure speculation", agreed a substantial wage cut last summer.
And it is understood that a rival club would not have to pay out any compensation if he were to want to move on.
However, Kilmarnock have enjoyed a great season so far and the club are anxious to keep the manager.
"Jim is under contract with us for another two seasons but we have offered him a new contract on improved terms," Johnson told the Daily Express.
"I sat down with Jim and we are just waiting to hear back from him.
"I am delighted with the way Jim has managed the team in what has been a difficult time and we want to keep him at Rugby Park long-term."
Jefferies, previously of Berwick Rangers, Falkirk, Hearts and Bradford City, has been Kilmarnock manager since 2002.
