Kettering Town manager Mark Cooper says they were fortunate to beat Forest Green 2-1 after a poor performance.
Second half substitute Jean-Paul Marna scored twice as the Poppies fought back from a goal down at the New Lawn.
Cooper told BBC Radio Northampton: "As bad as we were, we got three points and we move on.
"We took nothing onto the pitch from our pre-season. We've had to change the shape and the personnel to dig ourselves out of a hole."
Cooper added: "Marna is fantastic because when the game is tight, he'll give you something off the bench. That's not to say he won't start games, because he will.
"But I thought that was the best way to use him this time, and luckily I was proved right."
New signings Ian Roper, James Jennings, Lee Fowler, Francis Green and Damian Spencer made starts for Kettering.
"Roper was magnificent and Francis Green was exceptional as well," Cooper added.
