Ipswich coach Gary Ablett is undergoing hospital treatment having been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
The former Liverpool, Everton and Birmingham City defender was taken ill last week at Town's training ground.
The 44-year-old managed Stockport County last season, but left the club after their relegation to League Two.
Liverpool said in a statement: "Everyone at the club would like to extend their best wishes to Gary and hopes that he makes a speedy recovery."
An Everton club spokesman added: "Gary has always been a popular figure at Goodison... Our thoughts are with Gary and his family at this time."
Ipswich added in a statement: "Everyone at the club is devastated by the sudden onset of such a serious illness.
"Our thoughts are with Gary and his family and we would ask for the family to be given the privacy they require at this time."
