Teenage Middlesbrough defender Matthew Bates has cut short his loan spell at Ipswich because of injury. Bates, 19, was stretchered off during Saturday's defeat by Barnsley and scans showed he has a torn cruciate ligament as well as medial ligament damage.
Ipswich's head of sports science, Dave Williams, told Town's website: "Boro are aware of the situation and Matt is going back there."
Bates joined Town on 13 November and was meant to stay until January.
