Terry Butcher revels in tough Pittodrie win

Inverness boss Terry Butcher was delighted to see his side pick up maximum points against a determined Aberdeen side at Pittodrie.

The Highlanders won 2-1 to pile more pressure on Dons boss Mark McGhee.

"It was a tough win because I thought Aberdeen, to their credit, played well for their manager, for their club," Butcher told BBC Radio Scotland.

"We had to make sure the game was about us and not about Aberdeen. We were solid without being brilliant."

All of the talk pre-match was of McGhee's future, following Aberdeen's 9-0 drubbing at Celtic Park but Butcher was also determined to bounce back from a weekend defeat, having lost at home to Motherwell.

"Aberdeen recovered well from that defeat on Saturday but my players did as well," explained the former England captain.

"Aberdeen made a good start to the second half, got the equaliser, and I thought they were going to go ahead but we put a lot of bodies on the line to block things and kick things away.

"We were very disciplined in our defence and I always thought we could catch them on the break and in the end we got our winner."

It was Grant Munro who headed in from a Richie Foran delivery to seal the victory, while Adam Rooney had fired the visitors ahead from the penalty spot, only to see Andrius Velicka equalise.

Inverness, who won promotion back to the top flight last season, will have to avoid defeat at Hamilton and Celtic to go a full year without a league defeat.

Butcher knows it will tough to continue such fine form on the road and is looking for more of the same dedication that was on show at Pittodrie.

"It's going to be a right challenge to go a calendar year but it's a wonderful run," he said.

"Sometimes you have to do the gritty things better than your opponents and I thought we did that today."
