Hull have signed Wigan winger Kevin Kilbane on a two-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
The 31-year-old, who was out of contract at the end of the season, had fallen down the pecking order at Wigan.
"'Killer' was out of contract in the summer and on a financial level it makes sense," boss Steve Bruce told Wigan's website.
"On a football level, I'm disappointed to lose a very experienced squad member and a true professional in every way."
Kilbane, who has won 92 caps for the Republic of Ireland, signed for Wigan from Everton on deadline day in August 2006, making 84 appearances for the Latics.
"I feel we are well stocked up on the left hand side area and we left it up to Kevin to make the final decision," added Bruce.
"At his age I can understand he wants to be playing regularly, something which we have not been able to offer him of late."
Hull manager Phil Brown spoke glowingly of his new signing, who could make his debut in Saturday's Premier League match against visiting Arsenal.
"He is 31 years old; he has got 90-odd internationals," he said. "He has been a credit to the game at the highest level. That kind of experience is priceless to us at the moment."
Kilbane himself was delighted to complete the move and told the Hull official website that a move to the Tigers was always an attractive proposition.
"I want to be playing games and once I'd spoken to Phil Brown, it became clear in my mind that I wanted to come here.
"I just hope I can add something to the squad and bring something different."
Hull's hopes of adding West Ham midfielder or striker Luis Boa Morte, also 31, to their squad are not proceeding so well with the two parties unable to agree on personal terms.
Brown claims the onus is now on the former Portugal international to lower his expectations.
"We are miles apart where Luis is concerned with personal terms," he said.
"We have agreed a deal with regards to West Ham, but it is now down to Luis to come down in his evaluation of his next contract."
Meanwhile, midfielder George Boateng could be out for up to three months with knee ligament damage.
The 33-year-old was carried off on a stretcher during Wednesday's 1-0 FA Cup third-round replay win at Newcastle.
Brown told the Hull Daily Mail: "It looks like it could be the medial ligament, the extent of which we're not sure about, but we're possibly looking at two or three months.
"It's a big blow to lose someone with George's experience."
Former Holland international Boateng has made 18 first-team appearances for the Tigers since his £1m move from Middlesbrough last summer.
