Brown was "shell-shocked" to see his side lose 5-0 to Wigan
The Football Association have charged Hull City manager Phil Brown with improper conduct.
The charge relates to Brown's touchline behaviour during the Tigers' 5-0 home defeat by Wigan Athletic at the KC Stadium on 30 August.
Brown, 49, has until 17 September to respond to the charge.
The Premier League newcomers have had a mixed start to the season, winning their first game and drawing the second before losing to the Latics.
Brown was reported to have kicked a water bottle in frustration during the home loss and trudged up to the stands before the referee had chance to punish him.
At the start of the season the FA launched an initiative to cut out the dissent aimed at officials in English football called the 'Respect' programme, which included the behaviour of managers.
Brown is the first manager to be charged by the FA this season.
Hull declined to comment when asked whether Brown would appeal against the charge.
