Mowbray has a limited budget at Easter Road

He said: "I've been at Hibs two years now and what can you achieve here?

"I'm not going to be here in four years, maybe not even in three years, just trying to finish fourth.

"Money matters. We finished 11 points up on Hearts last season and suddenly they've had an influx of cash, brought players in, and the gap has swung the other way."

Mowbray has been linked with a return to former club Middlesbrough should their boss Steve McClaren be named England manager.

"If the Middlesbrough job comes my way it will be because there's a vacancy and it's right for me," Mowbray added.

"If Steve McClaren goes and their chairman Steve Gibson thinks Tony Mowbray is the best man for the job then he will probably make the call to my chairman and ask the question.

"Then we will have a decision to make but, at the moment, we don't have one."

Mowbray has often complained of the primitive training facilities at Hibs, with his young players using muddy public parks to prepare for matches.

The Easter Road club have organised their running costs in recent years but are still saddled with a large debt and that may curb Mowbray's ambition.

"The stuff that goes with the Scottish game is suffocating," he continued.

"I'm not going to be a career Scottish manager, moving from Hibs to boss Falkirk, Livi or whoever. I'm not going to do it."
