Zaliukas is out of contract with Hearts in December
Marius Zaliukas is the new Hearts captain and manager Jim Jefferies hopes the defender will agree an extended contract at Tynecastle.
The 26-year-old Lithuanian, who has been at the club for four years, sees his current deal expire in December.
"There is time yet to talk to him and hopefully we can keep him longer," Jefferies told the club website.
"He's under contract at the moment and the important thing is that he is out on the pitch and has done well for us."
Scotland full-back Lee Wallace has been made vice-captain for the forthcoming season, with Hearts kicking off their Scottish Premier League campaign at home to St Johnstone on 14 August.
