Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo says he substituted Christian Nade after just 30 minutes against Dundee United for the sake of the player and the team.
Nade was yellow carded for a reckless challenge on United's Paul Dixon and was immediately swapped for David Obua.
"Christian made a foul out of frustration. He forgot his work and showed indiscipline," said Laszlo.
"He could be shown a red card, so I protect not only the player but also the team."
Nade's withdrawal left Hearts without a recognised striker on the field in a game that eventually ended goalless.
Nevertheless, the Hearts manager said he had no hesitation in taking off the Frenchman.
"I don't look at the players name or reputations, only what is best for the player and the team," said Laszlo.
