Hearts have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Anthony Basso following a successful trial from Auxerre.

The 27-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Scottish Premier League outfit.

Hearts assistant Stephen Frail told his club website: "He looked a good player during his trial period.

"Now he has a prolonged period during which he can become more familiar with Hearts and Edinburgh and stake his claim for a place in the team."

The Tynecastle club were seeking cover for Steve Banks following Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon's 9m transfer to Sunderland.

Basso began his career at Auxerre before moving to Udinese in 2000.

He failed to establish himself in the first team and spent most of his time in Italy on loan to Serie B clubs Chieti, Benevento and Viterbese.

Basso then moved to Norwegian outfit Viking Stavanger in 2004, but his return to Auxerre last summer failed to result in a first-team appearance.

"He is a big lad and he has good presence," added Frail.
