Calum Elliot scored against Falkirk |
Hearts striker Calum Elliot has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract less than a week after scoring twice in a 5-0 thrashing of Falkirk. But Tynecastle head coach Graham Rix says the 18-year-old's new deal, which runs until 2009, is deserved for his all-round commitment.
"The contract is not just due to his goals this week," said Rix.
"Calum has done very well for us since I came here in November. It also sends out a message to other youngsters."
Elliot signed professional terms with the Edinburgh club in June 2004 and made his debut as a second-half substitute against Inverness in September last year.
He has made 15 appearances this season, mainly as a substitute, but was handed a starting place last week following an injury to Roman Bednar.
Bednar is again injured for Sunday's meeting with league leaders Celtic, with Elliot poised to start again for the side lying second.
And Rix stressed that other young players will realise they will be given their chance no matter their age should they impress.
