Rix prepares for verbal backlash
Graham Rix
New Hearts coach Graham Rix believes he will be able to cope with the verbal abuse he may receive from fans.

The reaction from Rix's appointment has been mixed as a result of his 1999 conviction for unlawful sex with a 15-year-old girl and indecent assault.

"The stick I'll get? Listen, I've been to Spurs with Chelsea, but they don't know the full story," he said.

"I want to build a relationship with the fans and hopefully they will see what a nice guy I am."

The 48-year-old, who was officially unveiled on Tuesday as the head coach at Tynecastle, will take charge of his side for the first time on Sunday 20 November against Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

I can't imagine my life without football
Graham Rix

Rix added that he was delighted to be back managing a football team, having previously been in charge at Portsmouth and Oxford United.

He also explained why he could not give up his relationship with the game, despite the possible adverse reaction he could face by returning.

"There are two reasons - a, I love football, and b, I know the full story (behind his conviction) that I've never, ever said," he said.

"All I've ever thought about was being a professional footballer and being involved in football.

"I can't imagine my life without football. I've had it when I've been unemployed and at the time you think 'Great, time for a game of golf and some gardening'. But it's not enough.

"I've enjoyed scouting for Wolves, taking in games during the week and on a Saturday, but on the other four days of the week I've been chomping at the bit and thinking 'what a waste'."
