Hartlepool defender Michael Nelson will leave United this summer after turning down a new deal at Victoria Park for the 2009-10 season.
Nelson, 29, was linked with a move to League One champions Leicester City last season and boss Chris Turner admitted he understood the decision.
"This could be a big time for him to move on," Turner told the club website.
"He'll leave the football club with good wishes after giving us six good years of service."
Gateshead-born Nelson joined Pools from Bury in June 2003 for a fee of £70,000, and went on to make more than 300 appearances for the club.
