Ralph stood down following the collapse of takeover talks with potential investors and said: "I feel I have done my bit for Halifax.

"Now I must step aside and concentrate on resolving several personal and financial issues.

"Of course, I'd be pleased to assist in any way I can with the continued welfare of Halifax should any group or individual wish to be involved."
