Grimsby Town manager Mike Newell is still hopeful of making striker Adam Proudlock's loan move a permanent one.
The 27-year-old, who joined the Mariners from Darlington at the start of November, has yet to score in four games for the League Two club.
Ex-Luton boss Newell said: "I think he's added another dimension to us. His experience and his know-how has allowed us to get up the pitch."
However, Newell admits the club are not going to sign Robbie Fowler.
The former England striker, now at Blackburn, had held provisional talks with the Mariners about a player-coach role.
But Newell said: "To me it's finished, if there was any glimmer of hope it's gone now."
