King has previous managerial experience with Swindon and Mansfield

King replaces chairman Mike Woodward, who had taken over the manager's role after sacking Frank Gray last month.

But business and personal reasons means Woodward has relinquished the role and will focus on his duties as chairman.

King, 50, whose playing career included spells with Everton, QPR, Luton and West Brom, had been working as a scout since leaving Swindon last year.

King told BBC Essex: "I'm made up. To have a position at any club in football is a good job.

"Mick called me and asked if I would be interested again because I wanted the job in the summer when Frank Gray was appointed.

"I think this is an ambitious club and we can put this season back on track."

Woodward told BBC Essex: "I've enjoyed my short time in charge but at the end of the day I don't have the sort of contacts needed to bring quality players to the club.

"Andy was my second choice when Frank Gray was appointed so when Frank left Andy was in my thoughts. He has great experience, is a real character and is already working on bringing news players to Grays Athletic."
