Stan Ternent has quit as manager of Gillingham following relegation from the Championship. Ternent took over in December from caretaker John Gorman, who had picked up the reigns when the four-year reign of Andy Hessenthaler ended.
But the former Burnley boss was unable to prevent the Gills sliding into League One.
Chairman Paul Scally said he had been "unable to persuade" Ternent to continue at the club.
Scally said it was "with much regret" and in spite of "putting forward what the club believes to be an attractive package" that Ternent had walked away from the club.
"I would like to thank Stan for all the effort and hard work he put in trying to keep us in the Championship, and it gies without saying that I wish him well for the future."
Scally said he expected to appoint a successor by Friday with Ronnie Jepson, who was Ternent's assistant, in the frame.
"Like Stan, Ronnie has also impressed me with his work since he joined us," Scally said.
"Whilst we are unable to work with Stan next season we may, of course, be able to agree a package with Ronnie, and I will certainly be talking with him over the next few days."
