Gillingham manager Stan Ternent was devastated after the club's last-gasp relegation to League One. The club drew 2-2 away to Nottingham Forest but it saw them miss out on staying up on goal difference as nearest rivals Crewe beat Coventry 2-1.
Ternent told BBC Sport: "It's the worst day of my football career. The players have been magnificent since I have been at the club.
"Unfortunately I think I arrived a little too late here."
He took over at the end of December but failed to guarantee the club's Championship survival.
"The players have been fanastic for me but unfortunately fate conspires against you sometimes," said Ternent.
"That goal at the end sums it up really - that was a contender for goal of the season.
"But I couldn't have asked for any more from my players. But you can imagine the dressing-room was very flat and quiet after the game."
