Moritz Volz, who played 146 games for Fulham before being released last summer, has been given the chance to resurrect his career by Schalke.
The 26-year-old full-back started his career at Schalke in 1999 before spells with Arsenal, Wimbledon and Ipswich.
He was part of the 26-man Schalke squad that flew to Jerez on Saturday for a one-week training camp before the Bundesliga restarts on 15 January.
Schalke right-back Rafinha's future is unclear after a late show to training.
Volz, who received a German international call-up in 2004 but did not play, could nail down a full-back spot at the club and also secure a contract.
